Official Participant Briefing — DNA Hack for Health 2026
This weekend you'll design digital health tools on top of Bangladesh's real national health system — the Shared Health Record (SHR). No prior health-tech experience is needed. The briefing below starts from zero: the problem, the system, your themes, and how judging works. Read it before you start building.
Open the Full Briefing Deck (18 slides)Four things are broken: records that don't travel between hospitals, a new patient identity at every counter, policy-making in the dark, and systems that can't talk to each other. Understand what's broken before you write any code.
Bangladesh already runs live digital health infrastructure: 1.42 crore citizens with a Health ID, 99.6 lakh records indexed in FHIR, and 110+ hospitals connected. You get to build on top of all of it.
Learn the vocabulary first — EMR, FHIR (say "fire"), API, Interoperability, Health ID, and HIE — in plain words. Come back to it whenever you get lost in the acronyms.
The national system has five parts that pass work like a relay — MCI, HIE, FHIR Store, Registries, and EPI/NID — all running on global standards (FHIR R4, ICD-11, LOINC, SNOMED CT, OpenHIE, SMART on FHIR). Your project joins through the same APIs.
Built in four layers: Citizen & Provider, Interoperability, Core Services, and Data & Intelligence. Knowing the layers tells you exactly where your project fits.
Identity & Trust (Health ID, Master Client Index, Consent Manager) and Clinical Data (Encounter Repository, Terminology Registry, Facility & Provider Registry). Use these instead of building your own.
Follow Rahima's data from check-in and consent, through the EMR and FHIR store, into her health app and the ministry's anonymous dashboards — the whole system in one story.
The global standards that make your app work everywhere: FHIR, ICD-11/LOINC/SNOMED, Health ID/MCI, OpenHIE & HL7, FHIR Claims, and SMART on FHIR. They separate a class project from something a hospital could adopt.
Pick the theme that excites you; your submission must fit at least one. The judging factors are identical across themes, so choose the one your team can demo best.
Each theme maps to a real, wide-open market in Bangladesh — from $96 Bn EMR/EHR systems to insurance claims, patient portals, labs & diagnostics, and terminology services. The gaps are still open.
Three directions worth your weekend: clinical/diagnostic support, predictive & population health, and Bangla health assistants. One warning — an AI is only as good as its data, so get yours into FHIR shape before you touch a model.
Build FHIR-first, use standard codes, plug into the SHR instead of rebuilding it, write consent before features, prefer clean data over clever models, and think OpenHIE from day one.
Four factors decide everything: Cost-Effectiveness (35%), Medical Impact (30%), Feasibility & Scalability (20%), and Technical Execution (15%). Each judge scores 1–5 and the weights make a total out of 100.
